Volker Stevin Highways is committed to maintaining safe road travel conditions for the communities we live and work in, and to the safety of our employees on every job site, every day.
Building and maintaining Alberta's highways to keep our community safely moving forward.
Driven Towards Safety
We have been responsible for providing the motoring public with a safe, and enjoyable experience while travelling on Alberta’s roads for over 25 years.
Who We Are
Committed to your safety
Our story begins in 1996 with the privatization of highway maintenance in the province of Alberta. We started our operations in Southern Alberta, and have maintained the roads, and bridges in the Lethbridge Contract Maintenance Areas ever since. In 2001 we assumed responsibility for the Calgary area, and further expanded our operations in 2016 with the 30-year maintenance contract of the North East section of the Anthony Henday Drive in Edmonton. In August 2019 we added all of Mountain View County, and Clearwater County to our areas, and currently maintain approximately 30% of the provincial road network ( ~ 18,500 lane km’s). Over 200 plow trucks, and more than 350 people, work all year round to provide safe roads, and bridges to the travelling public in Alberta.
Our Mission
We are driven by the core belief that effective, and efficient highway maintenance focuses on the safety of the travelling public, and the safety of our highway maintenance crews. While safety is our top priority, maximizing the life span of highway infrastructure is equally important to us, and to our partners.
It is this public service, and culture of safety that is the foundation of our strong reputation. We intentionally engage our clients in the planning, and contract management process, resulting in long lasting relationships built on the core values of trust, integrity, and professionalism.

What Our Employees Say About Us
Gord H.
Equipment Coordinator
I really appreciate Volker Stevin Highways being a family-oriented company. My family knows firsthand about disaster, and NO WORDS can express the gratitude we felt when we lost our horse training facility in 2012. VSH matched funds raised, supplied equipment, trucks and crews to rebuild our facility, and haul donations of feed from all over Alberta because we lost all of our winter supply in the fire. VSH and my coworkers will always be a big part of our family lives.
Sarah J.
Quality Technician
My favourite part of being an Operator was during the winter season, when I was climbing into my truck and plowing the snowy roads, knowing that my family and friends would make it to work safely that morning. I take pride in the roads that I maintain and get great personal satisfaction knowing that I am a part of the team that maintains the cleanest, safest and smoothest roads in Alberta for all residents and tourists who use our highways.
Riley B.
Contract Technician
I started as a summer student 15 years ago and have worked my way through many roles to the position I am in now. I enjoy coming to work, especially when I get to tackle something new and exciting. I thrive on troubleshooting and helping find a solution or better way to accomplish a task. Furthermore, I really enjoy working alongside the crew and having the opportunity to interact with so many people.
